Up to 46% of children in the UK have experienced anxiety about using school toilets.
The School Toilet Project
My work with ‘Healthy Bs – Bladders, Bowels and Bathrooms’ has led to me auditing a lot of school bathrooms! What I have seen has shocked me - even after 25 years in education!
This is not just my experience. UK research highlights that inadequate school toilets are not a minor facilities issue but a significant public health, wellbeing, and educational concern.
A YouGov poll of 1,000 UK parents found that 46% reported their child had experienced anxiety about using school toilets, while wider UK research shows some children even avoid school altogether due to toilet concerns.
Blocked urinals spilling out pools of urine onto the floor, faeces on cubicle walls, urine-soaked wall panelling, flooding sinks, broken toilet seats or locks and soiled toilet tissue paper pretty much everywhere!
Healthy Bs are currently working with The University of Bristol, York St John University and ERIC, The Children's Bowel & Bladder Charity on a large-scale project looking at the impact of school toilets on children's health and wellbeing.
Many, many people and organisations have tried to shine a light on this topic over the years and our aim is to bring together as many of these different voices as possible. Voices from education, health, industry and the third sector all shouting at once!
